You may have passed by some graphic displays or signs that
seemed to be held by nothing but still stuck onto the surface as if glued up on
it. These are some of the labels that use the basic principle used by static
cling labels. It is this simple principle that has revolutionized the labeling
industry. Static labels are made up of a thin vinyl film which clings up onto
various surfaces. They are mostly used on clear windows or doors mostly made up
of glass but also on smooth plastic and metals for advertising. Since these
labels don't use any adhesive they can be removed with ease, repositioned or
even reused later.
One would think that since the static labels have the name
“static” within their name, they use the principle of static electricity, but
that is not true. I bet you are surprised. If it did use the static energy
principle then it would mean that the thin vinyl film was statically charged it
would not stick to itself. This is because the like charges would repel each
other since like charges repel as it is in Physics. But since a static label
does stick to itself I bet your wondering how it works?
So then how do the static
labels operate then? They stick onto smooth surfaces due to cohesive forces
which are experienced between the thin vinyl film and the perfectly smoothed
surface like glass. This enables the static label to adhere or cling onto the
smooth surface like a suction cup thus bringing about the static label.
The main advantage of these static labels is that they do
not use any adhesive material to help it to stick and this makes it convenient
since it does not damage the smooth surface or paint work on the smooth surface
when removed.
Due to the lack of adhesive materials they are not weather
resistant so they are not recommended for outdoor use. They tend to dry up and
fall of easily when used exposed to cold and dry climates, thus making them not
to be a long term option sticker or label. The thin film vinyl material does
not retain its clinging abilities for a long period. They are also quite cost
effective when used for various purposes thus making them much convenient.
These static
labels have various applications but are mostly used as signs such as:
-Signs on vehicles and vehicle stickers.
-Signs that announce discounts on shops or also job
vacancies.
-Signs for promotional purposes and banners.
